et these people out of here!’ shouted Arrestis. And then

‘G he saw that the androids weren’t moving, their pearly skins now a dull grey. ‘Ladygay! Where the hell is that ape of yours?’

She grabbed her talkstick. ‘Byson to the control centre immediately!’ Then, to the prisoners, ‘What do you think you’re playing at?’

Tornqvist stepped forward. ‘We’ve had rather too much of your hospitality, if you don’t mind. We’re leaving here. Now.’

‘I hardly think so. The Exemplar is under my control, and you leave when I say so. I suggest that you return to your room before things get unpleasant.’ She looked between them to the doors. ‘Ah, Garrett.’

Tornqvist spun on one foot and kicked Byson in the groin.

The giant collapsed with a scream and lay unconscious in the doorway. ‘You were saying?’ He pointed towards the Archway. ‘Hellenica: can you operate this?’ She shot a look of hatred at Matisse. ‘I must admit, I am a little rusty with the light-harp; such ancient technology.’ She walked over to the harp. Matisse moved forward to stop her, but both Tegan and Tornqvist ran from the doorway. Tegan elbowed Matisse in the stomach, knocking her to the floor, while Tornqvist threw his arm around Arrestis’s neck and moved behind him. Even though Arrestis was protected by his battle armour, his neck was bare and vulnerable.

‘If you make a move to stop her, I’ll break his neck,’ he barked. ‘Understood?’ Matisse struggled to sit up but said nothing. She couldn’t understand how the situation could have got so out of hand so quickly. She had had no warning that they had escaped: presumably they had cut the android from the webwork, which wouldn’t have been noticed because it would have assumed that the android was off-line.

Arrestis struggled to look at Tornqvist. ‘You’re quite violent for a minister of Lazarus, aren’t you?’

‘Where you’re concerned, I’d quite happily break your neck. You ordered DeSalle to rape my mind: can you imagine what that felt like? A complete stranger opening my memories for all to see?’

‘You should have complied,’ he replied. ‘It would have been so much easier.’

‘That’s it!’ shouted Monroe. ‘I’ve managed to link to the Bucephalus Grid.’ The Archway was now alight with blue fire. ‘You first, Turlough.’

Turlough, who had been keeping out of the action until now, moved from the doorway towards the Archway. ‘Back to the Bucephalus? About time.’ Two androids appeared behind him.

‘Grab them!’ Matisse yelled.

Monroe suddenly panicked. ‘I’ve dropped the inhibitor!’

‘Hellenica, Turlough – get away!’ ordered Tornqvist, moving towards the doors using Arrestis as a shield. ‘You too, Tegan!’ Monroe and Turlough ran through the Archway, vanishing in mid-stride. But the androids stood between Tegan and the Prelector’s escape route. She ran over.

‘What now?’

‘We’re going to have to take our chances here. When I say run, run.’ They were now standing directly in front of the doors. ‘Run!’ He threw Arrestis sprawling into the centre of the room before following Tegan.

Matisse shook her head. ‘That didn’t go very
